Why do Martial Arts Coaches hide things?  It drives me crazy!  Then, they leave you wondering why after a year of training with them, you still struggle on beating people in a tournament or even in practice.

Hawkeye The Dog Lays By Owner's Casket

I usually write about BJJ, Karate, and other Martial Arts in Ocean Springs on this blog.  However, my Dad and Stepfather were both in the military.  And, below is one of the best photos you will ever see.


Jon Tumilson was shot down in Afghanistan.  His dog, Hawkeye, attended the funeral.  As Tumilson's friend was about to start his eulogy, Hawkeye followed him down the aisle and laid down by his owner's casket.

Judo Junior Olympics - Mississippi On Medal Stand!!

J.R. and Priscilla Foster both went to the USA Judo Junior Olympics in Dallas, Texas.  Priscilla did not have a good day.  I don't know if it was me, her or what but she just did not do well.

J.R. was matched up again with THE toughest Judo figher in the United States and this time, he was penalized a couple of times and that was enough to lose the fight.  He then made a mistake that we have trained 1000 times NOT to do in another fight.  J.R. ended up third.

But, this is 3rd in the ENTIRE country.  Coming from Mississippi, which isn't exactly the "hot-bed" of martial arts, this is HARD to do.

Judo J.R. v. Toughest Fighter In The U.S.

J.R. v. Toughest Judo Fighter In The U.S.

J.R. gets to the gold medal round.  In the gold medal round, J.R. went up against his toughest opponent ever at the United States Junior Open in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  A VERY tough fight ensued between him and his opponent.  The kid he was fighting practices way more than we do and for a much longer time.  There are NO excuses though.  You either win or lose.

J.R. immediately came to grips and hit the guy with a throw right away.  There was no score.  J.R. attacked him a ton of times but we couldn't get the penalty call from the referee.  A crazy battle on the ground in grappling repeatedly between these two kids.  One sequence after another from each kid.  He does one move.  J.R. counters.  He does another move.  J.R. counters.  J.R. tries a sweep.  He counters.  And so it goes.

No one can win in regulation.  Now, we're into overtime.

Ground battle and I do mean ABSOLUTE BATTLE between these two kids on the ground!!!  Sweep to pin to counter to sweep to counter to pin.

J.R. makes one TINY mistake, he gets pinned.  He loses the gold medal.  If he had just run out the time, I'm convinced he would have gotten the Judge's decision.



He lost but we had a bunch of fun at this Judo tournament.  We'll be back to get them again.  J.R. wants the gold.

Medal Winner - Judo Martial Arts U.S. Open

I was wondering if Priscilla could win her matches at the U.S. Judo Open in Fort Lauderdale today.  She was nervous and so was I.

She lost her first match.  And then she went on a winning streak to come back and fight for the gold medal.  She threw the girl right on her back within 1 minute for the win!  I'm so proud.  She worked hard to get here and it a great fighter.

U.S. Open - Judo

I went to a Coaching seminar with Dr. Gary Berliner today.  He is arguably the top referee in the United States and one of the top referees in the world.  He had an interesting take on attacks and how good Judo is done.  And his take on ground work is a lot different than what you might think.

He is here at the U.S. Open in Judo to help educate coaches on how and why referees make certain calls.  It has been a great education so far.

I have arrived at the U.S. Open in Fort Lauderdale for Judo.  This is a national judo tournament with kids from all over the country.  It is a great tournament and it is always well-run.  Great Coaches, referees, from all over are here.

Priscilla and J.R. have their competition on different days.  Priscilla is Saturday and J.R. is Sunday.

I hope they can bring home some more medals like we did at the USJA Nationals in Toledo, Ohio.

Judo & BJJ - Ocean Springs - Nationals

I am excited to tell you that Priscilla and J.R. had some GREAT fights and Judo Nationals in Toledo.  It was a loooooonnnnnngggg drive to Nationals but we had fun along the way.  I'm back in Mississippi now and we are headed to Disney before the U.S. Open in Fort Lauderdale.

Both J.R. and Priscilla got second.  Each of them made a mistake that cost them the gold medal.  This is why we have to keep training and training hard to get the gold
